Mulilo secures Preferred Bidder status in Round 2 of South Africa’s BESIPPPP and BW7

Cape Town, 24 December 2024 – Mulilo, a leading Independent Power Producer (IPP), has been awarded five projects in Round 2 of South Africa’s Battery Energy Storage Independent Power Producers Procurement Programme (BESIPPPP) as well as a 240MW solar power project under South Africa’s Renewable Energy Independent Power Producers Procurement Programme (REIPPPP) Bid Window 7 (BW7).

The awarded projects are located across South Africa, including:

  • Mulilo Mercury BESS based in Free State (76 MW/ 304 MWh)
  • Welverdiend BESS based in Gauteng (77 MW/ 308 MWh)
  • Leeuwpoort BESS based in Gauteng (77 MW/ 308 MWh)
  • Rooikoppies BESS based in North West (77 MW/ 308 MWh)
  • Hartebeesfontein BESS based in North West (77 MW/ 308 MWh)
  • Middlepunt Solar in Free State (240MW/ 755, 668 MWh per annum)

This achievement cements Mulilo’s position as a successful IPP in South Africa’s renewable energy generation market. As the lead consortium member, Mulilo will oversee the construction, operation, and management of these projects under its integrated business model.

In line with its Social Impact strategy, Mulilo is committed to supporting sustainable development in the communities where these awarded projects are located. “Our Social Impact initiatives align with, and in most cases even go beyond, the government’s Economic Development obligations under both bid windows, contributing to driving positive change in the local communities” added Fourie.

Mulilo has also recently reached Financial Close on the three Oasis BESS projects awarded in Round 1 of BESIPPPP. These projects, currently under construction, will provide a combined capacity of 257 MW / 1,028 MWh to the Northern Cape and North-West provinces.

With this latest round of awards, Mulilo expands its BESS portfolio to 641MW and adds 240MW to its existing Solar PV projects, reinforcing its leadership in the sector.

Currently, Mulilo has 420 MW of operational wind and solar projects in its portfolio, with an additional 669 MW under construction, as the company continues to lead South Africa’s transition toward a more sustainable future.
